The Härmälä camping area on the opposite shore to the Tampere cityscape and the Pyynikki and Pispala hills is a legendary presence in the city, having existed since the 1950s. It houses both small cottages as well as parking sites for caravans, tents and other kinds of movable accommodation. In summertime, the site is popular due to its proximity to the city centre. The renaissance of caravan life during the Covid-19 pandemic has also ensured a steady flow of customers.
This summer may be one of the last remaining for the camping site, though, as city developers are interested in expanding the Härmälä neighbourhood and possibly building on the land now rented to the company that operates Härmälä Camping. The current rent agreement lasts until 2025 - whatever will happen after that is still unknown to all involved.
On weekends and during festivals, Härmälä nowadays has a reputation for being a rather restless and rowdy area to stay, but a quiet Wednesday evening proved to be another story. Together with journalist Neea Virlander, we followed the events of the evening and night at the camp site, meeting people from all walks of life, and understanding the friendly, timeless spirit of the place.
The complete reportage was a midsummer online feature in Aamulehti in June 2023.
